Civil Society, Social Movement, and Democratizaiton at Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait. Date: April 2001 Civil society and social movement have affected democratization at the both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Though democratization in Taiwan has been a complex process, the rise of social movement and civil society has undoubtedly played a crucial role in pushing democratization. Furthermore, democratizations does not stop social movements in Taiwan, and indeed, democratization has helped the transformation of social movement there. While a full scale of democratization has not taken place in the Mainland, the rise of civil society has become one of the most important factors in leading China's political changes. More important, the rise of civil society has led to the formation of social movement in the Mainland, as shown in the Falung Gong movement in recent years. We believe that an examination of civil society, social movement will help us understand the process of democratization in the Mainland and Taiwan. The information of the seminar is updated with the upcoming schedule. If you have any question or comment on the topic, please send an email to fieldworkchina@aol.com.
